Emmett’s Hatchet Flap Retalho “em Machado” de Emmett

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Emmett’s hatchet flap is a single or double triangular local rotation flap that allows the closure of small, medium and large defects in several skin areas.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four male patients with mean age of 78.8 years were submitted to wide excision of non-melanoma skin cancer (one basal cell carcinomas of the face and scalp, one porocarcinoma of the scalp and one atypical fibroxanthoma of the scalp), under local anesthesia, followed by the Emmett’s hatchet flap.
RESULTS: The average diameter of the surgical defects was 30 mm. The double hatchet flap was used in one case and the single hatchet flap in the remaining three patients. There were no postoperative complications. Functional and aesthetic results were very acceptable. Patients remain relapse-free at one year.
CONCLUSION: Emmett’s hatchet flap has proven to be a versatile, safe and effective surgical choice in all cases.
