Abstract

Elderly patients usually present with multiple comorbidities and polymedication, thus any health disturbance is always a source of serious concern.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 is the main pathogen causing encephalitis worldwide. In elderly patients, changes in consciousness status may correspond to a variety of underlying clinical conditions, therefore, differential diagnosis based on complementary diagnostic test results becomes essential for the correct approach to the patient in clinical practice.
